When people are trying to achieve a certain goal or outcome, they often look for a regimen to follow. After all, that’s how we’ve been trained to approach these things. And while a set of rules or instructions may help you create a specific result, it rarely leads to long-term change. For that, we believe you need more than a regimen. You need a system.
In this episode, we explore the distinction between a regimen (a set of rules) and a system (a process). Both can be useful. But in the long run, you’ll probably get more benefit out of learning a system than following a regimen.
If you have a regimen that you’re currently following, challenge yourself to go beyond just following (or breaking) the rules. Think about what’s working, and what’s not, and why. Because when you can learn from–and build on–both the successes and failures, you’re well on your way to turning a rigid regimen into a sustainable system.
Just went back and listened to CAP #11 on “IAA.” Did you realize you broadcasted that one on 7/1/20 – almost 2 years to the day? Anyway, thanks for reminding me of this valuable proces. I think it is the heart and soul of making changes, behavior modification, and achieving goals. When I’m frustrated or stressed it’s sometimes easy to be distracted from the attention part and fail to remind myself of the intention part. Then I often end up taking the wrong action. However, if I stay alert, focused, and in my adult I do remember the importance of my intention and do take the right action. We always have to keep our minds in gear and focused on the things truly important in our lives.
